TBT- The Jedediah Hawkins House, Jamesport.
Captain Jedediah Hawkins was born in Stony Brook in 1837, and began his life at sea at a very early age. He finally settled in Jamesport in this house that he built, with lots of local legend surrounding his "activities." One claims that he was an abolitionist and the house was a stop on the Underground Railroad, while another is that he was a gunrunner. I can personally attest that the house was indeed unique, and that there are trapdoors and secret passageways throughout, Friends, cousins, and I (you know who you are!) gently "visited" the premises when it was abandoned in the early 1980s, with all furnishings and linens intact, with dolls and children's clothing in the bedrooms. It was a chilling sight for sure.
The house is now beautifully refurbished and includes a restaurant, speakeasy, and inn. It was so tastefully redone and really captures the old-world charm of the day. Bravo to the team that cared so much to keep its story in place.
